Update: Here’s Wired’s presentation at SXSW on their iPad app prototype. Mediaite rounds up some reactions to it too.

UBC journalism professor Alfred Hermida pointed me to Bonnier and BERG’s amazing  concept video of how the iPad (or other tablet devices) could work.

The Guardian’s Mercedes Bunz also pulls together a few more.

I thought I’d round-up the ones that have been floating around the internet for the last few months and give my brief take on some of them. I’ve focused on magazines and included a few more general demo videos. But the possibilities for things such as gaming, social networking, etc. are mindboggling.

Did I miss any? Send me a note.

A few things to note:

1) Most of the concepts decided to lean on the familiarity of the magazine format. The idea of a cover, table of contents, pages, etc.

2) Interactivity and sharing is key. Saving, linking, sharing features are included in many of them.

3) Keep the package together. You can’t just get a chunk of Wired, or SI or Popular Science (well, maybe you still can via. RSS or something)

4) Exploit the tech. There’s the obvious things like animations, video, but what about that crazy map/drop feature in the Courier demo? It’s a match-made in heaven with Toronto Life’s restaurant reviews or shopping guides, no?

5) There’s still lots of time and room left for innovation. Lots of big names are working on tablets and haven’t shown off what they can do. I’m still waiting to hear from newspaper publishers and other big media outlets, not to mention third party developers and people like Sony.
