Germany 2009: The people you meet

Sep 13, 2009 in Germany 2009

Travelling isn’t just about the places you see, the people you run into along the way might be just as important and make the trip worthwhile.

I’ve been pretty lucky to have run into some great people on this trip that have made Berlin a little more awesome. So far I’ve run into:

  • A Mexican trying to market Panam sneakers in London
  • An Israeli guy biking across Europe
  • A French student studying “social economics” (which we figured out is kinda like social justice studies or something)
  • An accordion playing French girl studying science policy
  • Two Dutch medical students.
  • An Australian art restorer whose been spending a year in Genoa
  • Three Aussie physiotherapists
  • A German architect concerned about gentrification in Kreuzberg
  • A West Berlin born physics student and a Calgary Flames fan
  • A former teen librarian and graphic novel enthusiast from Vancouver currently living in Geneva
  • A German fashion student who desperately wants to move to London
  • A Londoner who works for an avant-garde fashion house in Berlin
  • A TV crew from Fashion Television (yea, they were from Toronto)
  • A woman from Syracuse, New York who escaped the Bush regime and doesn’t want to go back now that she’s here.

Germany 2009: Why can't our trains work like this?

Sep 11, 2009 in Germany 2009

I know, I know. There’s funding, lack of infrastructure, the supremacy of the automobile, distance and maybe even a North American mistrust of rail travel (probably inculcated from taking Amtrak or VIA).

Germany 2009: Getting to know you

Sep 09, 2009 in Me Me Me

I’ve spent the last few days getting to know the German side of my family.

About 40 years ago, my father’s older brother, Lian Hie, left Indonesia for medical school in Germany. Over the next few years two other siblings joined him. None of them ever came home, deciding to stay in Europe instead.

Along the way, they all got married, had kids and carved out pretty great lives for themselves here.

Lian Hie ended up marrying an American exchange student from Missouri (my aunt Becky). Kiong, one of his brothers became a doctor and Siok San, his sister, also went into medicine  but opted to do acupuncture instead.

If there’s anything I’ve learned from this (other than the fact that my many of my cousins are pretty damn good-looking) is that migration is in the Tan genetic code.

We move around, a lot. More importantly, no matter where we end up we don’t just survive, we do well. There’s a lot to be said for that.
