I covered a bunch of events for the National Post at the International Festival of Authors and met some great authors. I’m still transcribing a few of the interviews but here’s some of the stuff.
I talk to screenwriter and novelist David Benioff (the 25th Hour, City of Thieves) about writing for film, larger than life characters and why you all should talk to your grandparents if you still have the chance.
I’ll have interviews with Junot Diaz (!) and Aleksandar Hemon online soon.
But for now, here’s some choice quotes from the Sarah Vowell talk and the roundtable between Junot Diaz and Canada’s literary golden boy Rawi Hage (he’s been nominated for all three major book prizes in Canada! wha?)
My interview with Sarah Vowell was taped for the Post so that will hopefully be online later this week.
Other weird IFOA tidbits in point form:
Mia Kirshner is much smaller in person and really likes comic books, which makes her even hotter, if that’s somehow possible (she did a book on refugee children!)
A roomful of Irish authors sitting around talking is possibly one of the best sounds in the world.
Comic book artist Lynda Barry is super nice (she signed autographs for at least two hours after her event and talked and listened to everyone), very funny and she also has a “hard on” for Canada.
Actually, most American authors seem to really, really like us.
Hard to believe, but Junot Diaz has never been invited to a sci-fi convention after writing the Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.
Madeline Thien and Rawi Hage are possibly the cutest Canadian Literature couple. Sorry Amanda and Joseph Boyden.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan dvd Because of work I thought I actually had a pretty good handle on the chaos that’s happening on Wall St. At its most simple, the current financial crisis is some terrible example of economic chickens coming home to roost. A lot (probably virtually all) of bankers and financiers decided to give a whole bunch of property-speculating Americans (and probably a few people who just really wanted a house and couldn’t afford them) really, really scary mortgages. The bankers then packaged all these mortgages like Happy Meals and passed them amongst each other to make money but ooops, that doesn’t really work when people stop making their mortgage payments or they can’t flip those houses. That’s what’s happening, right?
Well sort of. A couple of months back This American Life did an episode of their show that explained the subprime mortgage crisis
. It’s still the clearest explanation of the whole financial boondoggle that I’ve seen. Because of all the chaos in the last few weeks Ira Glass and his team did a follow up to that show.
It tries to lay out what’s really going on (the part about credit default swaps is SOOO mind bogglingly scary that it almost made me sick) and also tries to figure out whether this massive 700 gajillion dollar bailout was a good thing (their answer… throw $700-billion at any problem and it’ll make it better)
Listen to it. If you’re easily scared, may I suggest a security blanket, a stuffed toy or a cute boy/girl to hold on to tight.
Man, whoever thought economics could be so frightening. Shit. Pass me another drink.

Sure you can read qualified pundits talk about tonight’s Palin-Biden debate. They’ll tell you that Biden needs to not be a complete pompous, patronizing windbag and that Sarah Palin needs to not fall down. But really, the Biden-Palin debate can be summed up by one of the fiercest rivalries in pop culture. I am talking about the life and death struggle between Wil.E. Coyote and the Roadrunner.

The Coyote is the cunning, experienced one. Always with a plan (anvils, rocket-powered skates, traps and lure) but often tripped up by his own cleverness.
The Roadrunner is speedy, really hard to pin down, and popular amongst its supporters. So when you’re watching the debate tonight just remember Biden is the coyote and he really has to watch out for his own traps. Let Palin/Roadrunner beep-beep her way to debate defeat.
