Copy-editing at the Times not the fun, cushy job you think it is

I had a stint as a copy-editor at the National Post about two years ago so I kinda understand where New York Times copy editor Charles Cretella is coming from, sort of. Particularly this part.

Yes! You see, Cretella has been part-time at the paper since 1968, and he was convinced that this would be the year the paper would put him on staff
40 years as a part-timer. Whaaaaa? Cretella is 57, which means he started at the Times at the tender young age of 17. The story doesn’t revolve around the abysmal HR policies of the Grey Lady, it’s actually focused on a sexual harassment suit leveled at our long-in-the-tooth copy editor.

From the Daily News:
Cretella says his troubles started in 2006 when the other employee was hired and Cretella was asked to train him.
The new guy would walk close by after lunch breaks and whisper things like, “Did you miss me?” the lawsuit says.
The two became friends, with Cretella giving him a hand-me-down jacket, letting him use his personal coffee machine and giving him some of the candy he often kept at his desk.
In June 2006, the younger employee “started to act inappropriately more consistently” and once rubbed himself through his pants for 20 minutes in his cubicle, the lawsuit says.
Makes me glad I work at a reasonably sane newsroom.
