Toronto Island is a sandspit. From above, it appears as a collection of rocks smoothed flat for luck by a nervous hand. Marbled by water, it is composed of fourteen islands in total, the archipelago coming together in a thick hook shape at its western end. The island was formed over the course of 10,000 years. After the Scarborough Bluffs were bullied into being by the last ice age, Toronto deaf under a kilometre of ice, the bluffs were carried by wind and currents to form a peninsula. The night of April 14, 1858, a storm broke the peninsula’s neck, separating it from Toronto for good and founding the island. It was, like so many things, born out of a natural and lengthy violence.

I geeked out when they mentioned this story at a web meeting the other day. Post writer Vanessa Farquharson went to TypeCon in Buffalo. Yes, a convention of typographers. Her story has the great headline “A Yearn to Kern.”

From the story:

Speaking of favourite fonts, at one point during the conference a group of designers sitting at a bar table suddenly pushed aside their drinks, grabbed a pen and paper and began to make a list.

“We’re trying to figure out,” explained one of them, “if you were stuck on a desert island and only had 10 fonts, what would they be?”

This provoked a lot of heated debate. Eventually, though, the list was narrowed down to:

a number of times but yesterday I really looked closely at the street fashion photography of the New York Times’ Bill Cunningham. He does a weekly column in the Sunday Times of various cool things people in New York are wearing. But even more fun are his narrated photo slideshows.

This week’s photo essay on the pencil skirt left me a bit short of breath (bear with me ladies, I’m not a lecherous pig or anything). But for sheer comedic value listen/watch his essay on the trend of men who wear low-riding pants. Cunningham’s exasperation at arguably one of the oddest fashion trends is worth a listen.
