Esquire's pick for president?

Jul 22, 2007 in Media

esquire.jpgHmmm, while Esquire hasn’t officially endorsed a candidate it sure does look like they’re banking on John Edwards. They’ve got not one, but two features on the man. Plus plenty of Presidential looking photos.

There’s a lot to like about Edwards:

He’s Southern (The last two Democratic presidents have been from the South, the last non-Southern Democrat to be President was JFK, although LBJ was from Texas)

He’s got cash (Not just for fancy haircuts but for that pesky campaign)

He’s got a rags-to-riches story (“Did I tell you that I was the son of a mill worker?” Now he’s a millionaire lawyer)

He’s got a half-decent platform (Boiled down to one phrase “Being poor sucks”)

He’s not Hilary Clinton (too polarizing) or Barack Obama (perceived as a lightweight)

He’s got a sob story (his wife’s cancer is good for a couple of thousand votes, sadly)

Thanks Ron

Jul 21, 2007 in Me Me Me

I found out this week that a friend passed away. Ron Elaschuk (the Captain) was a regular at I Deal Coffee. We’ve shared a lot of great conversations together and he was a fixture at I Deal. I went to his wake earlier in the week and was overwhelmed by how many people considered him a friend and part of their lives. He was part of mine too.

My fondest memory of him will be the one time when I saw The Captain belt out a rendition of the Velvet Underground’s “I’m waiting for my man.”

You’ll be missed my friend. Thanks for the conversation. I’ll make sure to have a coffee for you.

Looking through a Monocle

Jul 15, 2007 in Media

The Relief of Belsen movie I picked up a copy of fancy-business mag Monocle. It’s the latest project of Tyler Brule (the founder of Wallpaper). According to their site Monocle aims to be “A fresh focus on global affairs, business, culture, design and all you need in life.”

Any Old Port!

Really, it’s a Wallpaper for the biz-set but interestingly enough, there’s a significant amount of urban design/sustainable transportation. Issue 3 looked at cycling (a story on Taiwanese bikemakers Giant

and how the Dutch do cycling). Issue 5, on newsstands now, has a top 25 list of urban design elements and the Monocle

Reading about food just makes you hungry

Jul 15, 2007 in Books

sushibook.jpgI occasionally do book reviews for various publications, including the National Post. My first review for them was on the globalization of food. My possible second review is of Sasha Issenberg’s The Sushi Economy.

After this book I vow not to review a book about food for the Post. I don’t want to be pigeonholed as the food guy.

Agent Cody Banks hd Creature from the Black Lagoon psp Issenberg’s book is a worthwhile read, especially if you’re trying to figure out just how your tuna, salmon and octopus gets from the sea to that hole in the wall sushi place on Bloor Street (it goes through a dozen hands, travels a lot of miles). It does make me wonder what the carbon footprint of my california rolls though. It can’t be good.

Also, if you look really closely at the photo there’s a guy(brarian?) named Jeff Buckley (!!).
