A couple of weeks ago I started listening to Fair Game, a Public Radio International program and I’ve come to the realization that I have an awful crush on the host of the show Faith Salie download Kissing Cousins movie . A couple of reasons, the woman is funny as heck, smart (did I mention she was a Rhodes Scholar!) and has this flirty, disarming, Southern belle radio banter that makes the hellish bus ride from Don Mills pleasant. It also doesn’t hurt that she’s definitely not a face made for radio.

She also gets bonus point for being a minor character in Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Did I mention she was a Rhodes Scholar.

Honestly, Fair Game is a fun show, a bit like Jon Stewart with a little more gravitas and without the photoshopped graphics. Oh there’s a free podcast so you can try out the show.

Just finished Yiddish Policemen’s Union last week and it’s one of the most entertaining books I’ve read in a long time. Notice I didn’t say best book, I’m not stupid enough to paint myself into that corner. If you like hard-boiled detective novels, Judaica and the Pacific Northwest (which are all thing that I love) then this novel should be perfect for you.

And because it’s too nice outside, I leave you with one of the most literate Simpson’s clips ever.

I’m annoyed that I didn’t plot my day as efficiently and ended up missing A.J. Jacobs Liberty Stands Still film , easily one of my favourite working journalists.

I’ve had this idea for over a year now and it looks like it’s finally going to come true. I’m starting a book club. Not just any book club but a short fiction book club.

Think about it, because of the flowering of creative writing programs, we’re seeing a gold rush of short stories. Every year dozens of them are published. Most of them sink into an abyss of anonymity.

Sadly, when people think about fiction the novel still reigns supreme. The short story and by default their writers just aren’t seen in the same league as their novel-writing compatriots.

Recent lectures that piqued my interest include James Howard Kunstler, the Google boys, Bill Clinton and more. But there are many others that I’m not familiar with that are worth a listen. They’re each about 20-30 minutes long and make my morning commute more eye-opening than a cup of espresso.
