Apparently Jane Campion is thinking of doing a film on the life of Keats. Sigh, I can just see all of the nerdy, overly sensitive, grad students rushing out to see this one. The question is why hasn’t anyone done this sooner? A quick search reveals two films about Lord Byron, easily the Romantic poet whose life is easily turned into film. One of them has the Grindhouse like title The Bad Lord Byron but was made in 1949. I think the time is ripe for an edgy remake.
Seeing how some of these guys lived pretty hard and died young (except Wordsworth of course) I’m wondering whether there’s more material here. It certainly was enough material for the Black Adder writing team Only Angels Have Wings
Catch Me If You Can full movie which had Byron, Coleridge and Shelley running into Samuel Johnson. It twists the history like a pretzel but it’s pretty darned funny.

I don’t think I’ve ever met Darren, but I know his work quite well. Especially his book the Iron Whim: A Fragmented History of the Typewriter. The book gets plugged in the New Yorker this week! Way to go Darren! Read my ex-editor Suzanne’s profile of the intrepid writer in This magazine.
