The Death of Toro
Feb 13, 2007 in Media
Another day, another magazine going belly up. This time it’s Toro, a Canadian men’s magazine cut from the Esquire A Good Year video A Good Man Is Hard to Find dvdrip Basic video , GQ cloth. The magazine’s publishers cited weak ad revenues. I had been eyeing the magazine for many, many months and it was very high on my list of places I’d love to have my work published. Sadly that won’t be happening.
The magazine was wonderfully designed, had its share of good writers and very creative editors. I’ll miss seeing it drop out of the Globe and Mail
.
Toro
‘s demise raises an interesting question. Good, creative, interesting content, most of the time, requires money. Either to create (those photo spreads are expensive) or to buy (great experienced writers, illustrators and photographers deserve to get paid well). A few magazines buck the trend by being extremely wily, resourceful, and by publishing relatively infrequently (Spacing
, is a great example of this). But Toro‘s demise is yet more evidence that it’s tough for smart, interesting magazines in Canada to get enough cash to survive. It seems that sustainable magazine publishing in Canada is an elusive idea.
